Social Media Breakfast San Diego

SMBSD-Start your day the Social Way

This year as we're into the end of March, I'd like our group to take on a project that needs help. I'm sure all of you have wonderful skills that you'd like to donate to some worthy cause and see a group in San Diego achieve results based on all your hard work.

Please let me know if you have any projects in mind as this will become a crucial part of what this group stands for in the long term ... even when we all retire to our islands and are playing golf, scuba diving or just enjoying the breeze.

BJ,

I'm the Founder and Board Chair for Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) San Diego. We are celebrating our first year in San Diego next month and are truly excited about all the growth we have during that time. In a year we have approximately 400 members using social media is our primary outreach. We host networking and professional development events both in person and online for the San Diego nonprofit community.

Currently, I am also serving as the Communications Team coordinator and we are writing our first communications plan, which again, is bases on social media. We would LOVE to have help in two ways 1) writing our social media communications plan and 2) exploring a Ning online network.

I'd be very interested in talking with you more if you are interested. My contact is edaconsulting@gmail.com. You can check out more about YNPN San Diego on our website at www.ynpnsandiego.org. I also hope that you and others can join us on April 16 at Hard Rock Cafe for our on year Birthday Bash!

Take care, Emily Davis

Hey Emily,

If you'd like to talk about your group tomorrow for 5 minutes, we'll be collecting nominations essentially and having the SMBSD group choose their favorite.

See you in the morning!
BJ

BJ,

San Diego Canyonlands (SDCL, http://sdcanyonlands.org/ ) is an environmental non-profit that develops citizen groups that protect and restore San Diego's urban canyons and runs educational programs that connect children with the outdoors through school and after-school programs. By cleaning up and restoring canyons we are improving water quality in the oceans, preserving habitat for endangered species and giving thousands of children the opportunity to experience nature near their homes.

We have been interested in developing a social media campaign because we are uniquely suited to benefit from it: we have hundreds of volunteers, in 40 different friends groups, who are meeting each other and working together and would benefit from organizing themselves online. Many of our target volunteers are young or professionals who spend a lot of time online.

SDCL would give a social media project team a challenge with many interesting opportunities. Some of the many options to explore include:

-- Collecting and distributing volunteer produced video and photos of canyon hikes and improvement projects.
-- Generating google maps of canyons and trail heads and integrating them into the websites ( such as http://sdcanyonlands.org/canyon-friends-group/maps)
-- Using twitter to communicate projects and events.
-- Establishing forums to discuss projects
-- Ensuring our canyon events get into Eventful.
-- Give the public a way to report canyon-related problems like sewage spills.

Thank you for considering this project,

eric, Board President, San Diego Canyonlands.

Hello BJ,

Thank you for this opportunity to share the story of San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine (SDHIPM) and why we feel a comprehensive social media campaign could truly impact the global work of the organization.

At SDHIPM, we help seriously ill adults and children, and their loved ones, find comfort and relief from suffering, and we’ve been a leader in this work since 1977.

Today, we are one of the 10 largest not-for-profit hospices in the nation. Locally, we care for nearly 1,000 patients each day in their own homes or in other facilities throughout all of San Diego County. We do it in the compassionate hospice tradition, based on bringing comfort and recognizing the dignity of each person.

Globally, The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice is transforming healthcare and relieving suffering by improving the quality and accessibility of palliative care through education and research. We are the largest resource in the world for training palliative medicine physicians and other specialists, as renowned physicians and healthcare specialists come to The Institute to learn best practices in palliative medicine. In addition, The Institute is involved in research studies including IRB-approved protocols in areas such as (1) pain and symptom management, (2) the recognition and treatment of depression and delirium, (3) the effectiveness of palliative care education for health professions students and practicing clinicians, and (4) counseling and support for families facing loss and significant transitions in their lives. Researchers at The Institute also lead and/or participate in multi-site clinical trials of new palliative medications and therapies.

SDHIPM exists to make a difference. To relieve suffering. To restore dignity. To comfort people living with a life-limiting disease. And to teach other medical professionals and organizations how to make a difference in their own communities. We feel a comprehensive social medial plan that combines the power and reach of social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Ning, etc. can help our organization to continue its mission "to prevent and relieve suffering and promote quality of life, at every stage of life, through patient and family care, education, research, and advocacy."

I also invite you to read one patient's story who articulates the essence and beauty of why SDHIPM exisits. Visit http://www.sdhospice.org/pdf/You%20Matter.pdf

Again, thank you for this opportunity!
